Why DLC?

You may not be extremely familiar with Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) but we think it is an excellent choice for the coating on our razor’s cap and comb.  DLC coating has many commercial applications, including aerospace parts, NASCAR engine parts, pharmaceutical implants, high end watches, and of course, on the head of our razors.  DLC is an expensive coating option but we believe it is worth it for the following reasons:

It’s Harder

DLC is an extremely hard coating. The following graph (from pvtechnology.it) shows the comparative surface hardness of various materials, using the Vickers of Hardness scale:

In terms of relative hardness, DLC at 2000 HV is:

  • About 2.5 times as hard as stainless steel
  • About 3 times as hard as chrome

It’s Extremely Wear Resistant

Because of its durability, DLC is used as coating for machine tools such as drill bits, saws, and dies.  DLC coatings provide superior durability and wear resistance.

It has a Lower Coefficient of Friction

DLC is quite slick. The following chart compares the coefficient of friction of DLC and other materials:

The low-friction attributes of DLC help to provide a smooth shave from our razors.

It’s more environmentally friendly

The application of DLC is done in a vapor deposition environment and does not use harsh chemicals with negative environmental impacts.
